Simple Habits for Better Oral Health

By Dr. Jennifer Silver, Dentist & Owner, Macleod Trail Dental, Calgary

After 10 years in dentistry, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference good oral care can make—not just for your teeth but for your confidence, your health, and how you feel daily.

When most people think about dental care, they focus on brushing and maybe flossing when they remember. But the truth is, the small, consistent habits really set you up for long-term health. At Macleod Trail Dental Clinic, our approach is rooted in education, prevention, and building long-term trust with our patients.

Start With the Basics—And Do Them Well

I know it sounds simple, but brushing twice a day and flossing once a day really are your best defenses. And it’s not about brushing harder—it’s about brushing smarter. Use a soft toothbrush, take your time (a full two minutes), and don’t forget your tongue. Flossing matters as much as brushing—it gets to the spots in between your teeth where a brush can’t reach.

If I could give just one tip, it’d be this: don’t skip the floss. It’s quick and easy once it becomes routine and truly makes a difference.

What You Eat Affects Your Teeth, Too

Your mouth doesn’t exist in a bubble; what you eat and drink affects your teeth just as much as how you brush. Sugary snacks, soda, and even citrusy foods can wear down enamel or increase your risk of cavities. I always recommend drinking plenty of water, especially after meals. Calgary’s dry air can make your mouth even drier, and a dry mouth can lead to more bacteria buildup.

Staying hydrated is a surprisingly powerful way to protect your smile.

Don’t Wait for Something to Hurt

This is something I hear a lot: “I didn’t come in because nothing hurt.” But when something is painful, there’s often already a bigger issue. Regular checkups help catch problems early, like small cavities, early gum issues, or even signs of clenching or grinding you might not notice.

I completely understand if you’re feeling anxious about visiting the dentist. You’re not alone in that!

Your Smile Matters More Than You Think

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is how much people light up after something as simple as a cleaning or whitening. Taking care of your teeth isn’t just about health—it’s about how you feel about yourself. Your smile is one of the first things people notice; when you feel good about it, that confidence shows.

Final Thoughts

At Macleod Trail Dental, we’re all about helping you take small steps that lead to big results. If you’re unsure where to start, or it’s been a while since your last visit, reach out. We’ll meet you where you are—with care, not judgment.
